Goat Grazing
In 2017 the District took the lead in organizing the first grazing program in our community. This is a collaborative effort that includes the District, Marin Open Space, San Domenico School, Triple C Ranch, Rocking H Ranch, and the Ross Valley School District. The towns of Fairfax and San Anselmo along with private homeowners in those communities also participate. The program has improved fire safety in Sleepy Hollow by reducing the fuel load on our surrounding hillsides. Large stands of heavy brush including broom, poison oak. and coyote brush have been removed leaving native oaks and grassland. The goats reduce the annual grasses where possible near homes and create mid-slope fire breaks and defensible space along some of the fire roads.
The program is largely funded by property owners and the District provides supplemental funding in areas considered of strategic importance.
